Vegan Influencers Aren't Leaders | James Aspey CANCELLED | Animal Rights & Savior Complex
In light of James Aspey's cancellation in "Panamaniacs: Vegan Activist James Aspey Cons Followers in Crypto Scheme," I'm going to show you why vegan influencers aren't leaders. Unfortunately, the vegan community tends to hero-worship influencers with a white savior complex, which creates problems for animal rights activists.
Social media clicks and big muscles don't say anything about your ability to organize constituencies and create systemic change. Instead of telling you that we shouldn't waste our time challenging our dear white saviors, I'm going to tell you why they're ineffective and we should instead listen to the advice of actual experts.
As a community organizer who has done as many speaking engagements as James Aspey with fewer resources, has more experience, and has worked at Animal Charity Evaluators, I wanted to provide my insight. In this video, I discuss why vegan influencers are rarely good leaders and analyze the qualities that leaders need to be effective. In addition, I break down the statistics around why influencers like James Aspey may reach large audiences with the vegan message but fail to convert a meaningful percentage of the audience they reach.
There's nothing wrong with being an influencer. Social media marketing is great for building a brand and building a business. That being said, clicks do not correlate with systemic change. That's the part James and other influencers like James Aspey, Earthling Ed, Joey Carbstrong, and other white saviors are missing.
