Should We Eat Crabs & Lobsters?
The footage you have just watched was filmed at Billingsgate Fish Market in London.
This is the reality of these animals lives.
Every year around 1.4 million tonnes of crab are consumed worldwide. To put that into perspective, if the only crabs caught were the worlds largest species, The Japanese Spider Crab, which weighs around 20KG each, that would equate to a staggering 70,000,000 individuals being killed per year. With most crabs species being far, far smaller, the actual number is probably 10 times or more.
When it comes to lobsters, this is around 280,000 tons equating to another 70,000,000 lives per year. The death toll for these animals is literally beyond comprehension and all for what exactly?
Dragged out of their homes, thrown into boxes, stabbed or boiled to death, these living beings suffers immensely in their millions and millions to becomes someones 5 minutes of taste pleasure.
And the myth of these animals not being able to suffer has been busted time and time again.

Despite this, sadly they have no legal protections at all.
While researching for this post I even came across an article about a supermarket in New Malden selling live crabs wrapped in plastic.
“Environmental officers from Merton council found nothing illegal when they investigated. The RSPCA said the Animal Welfare Act 2006 doesn’t apply to crabs, but it still opposed cruel methods of selling the creatures.”

We need to speak up about this cruelty. This isn’t right. Why are we treating animals with such disrespect when we could literally eat a thousand other things.
It’s not “luxurious” to eat crab or lobster, it’s just marketing bullshit and animal abuse, plain and simple.
Most of us forget that the world is 70% ocean and the majority of the animals on this planet live in these waters, yet we routinely push them to the back of our minds in front of other more familiar animals.
Please speak up and protect ALL animals and help make this world a more peaceful place for all it’s inhabitants.
