The life of a British hen is a short and brutal one. Roughly half are still caged in what are laughably described as enrichment cages. Free range is now on an industrial scale and you can't trust smaller producers either. And what thanks does she get? Intensive, free-range or organic all hens are sent to slaughter at around 72 weeks old. Around 40 million male chicks are either gassed or minced up alive because they don't lay eggs.
